Vyšné Ružbachy - History
Vyšné Ružbachy village was founded close to rich mineral/thermal/
springs at eastern bottoms of Spišská Magura. It is located 623 meters
above sea level in the valley of Zálažný potok. The first reference is
dated to 1288, when Šoltýs Henrich from Podolínec established Nižné a
Vyšné Ružbachy. The golden age occurred for Ružbachy in 1549, when
Kazimír, the king of Poland, named Sebastián Ľubomírsky for the
hereditary mayor. This fact motivated to increase building and social
activity. The spa house with pool, kitchen, dining room and living room
was built in 1595. Stanislav, the son of Sebastián, turned spa into
known social metropolis of Polish and Ugrian aristocracy.

In 1744, after extinction of Ľubomirsky family direct branch, the
spa owners started to alternate. In 1825 baron von Jony became the
owner and started the spa redevelopment. He built a manor-house, a new
spa house and a “mirror bath”. His son, Daniel Jozef Jóny, managed the
spa as a descendent until 1865. Then the spa became the property of
Kežmarok seminary for a short period.
The polish earl Andrej Zamoyski
bought the spa from seminary in 1882. In 1923, he entrusted architect
Oskar Zuber to build natural thermal pool - the largest one in Slovakia
at the time.
After A. Zamoyski’s death in 1927, the youngest son Ján and his wife
Izabela de Bourbon, niece to the Spanish king, inherited the spa. The
Spanish king and prince of Bourbon visited the spa before the Second
World War.
The White house, one of the spa area dominant establishments, was built between 1929 and 1931. It is used as a social centre nowadays and consists of canteen, coffee-bar and the Earl Zamoyski restaurant. The plans of owners were stopped by The Second World War and nationalization. Spa was managed by ROH (Revolution Labor Union Movement) since 1952. In 1957, spa management was returned back to the government.
The private company Spa Vyšné Ružbachy, a.s. was established in 1995. Another of spa dominants is travertine pool KRÁTER, filled with the water from thermal spring Izabela. It is located on the top of the travertine mound. The pool has been a protected natural object since 1967.
