Strbske Pleso Spa - History
- Established under Solisko and Satan´s peaks betwenn Štrbské pleso
and Nové (New) Štrbské pleso tarns in Mlynický creek valley, it as at
the highest elevation of any spa and tourist Settlement in Slovakia. D.
Frohlich described Nové Štrbské pleso tarn in 1666 and in J. Buchholtz
senior wrote of a local distillery of cedar-pine/dwarf pine oils in
1719.
- The area was owned until 1901 by the Szeltványi family, who built the first building - a hunters cottage - there in 1872.
- Nové (New) Štrbské Pleso tarn (1,315 meters), extended by a
1905 arrangement of a creek, lies some 40 meters below the old Štrbské
pleso lake. A settlemnt with hotel were built according designs by
architect K. Móry at this time. Zhe hotel was originally a cottage with
an outlook cabin. A church was built later. When the cottage burnt down
in 1965 it was replaced by the Baník labour union recreational facility
for miners. The lake is frozen over 160 days a year on average.
